I was raised in Africa and, after graduating from the University of York, England, studied biology at the University of Oregon. Eschewing a hard core research career, I adventured around South America, including the Amazon and the Galapagos Islands. Combining my love of writing and travel resulted in the leading travel guide to the Amazon, The Amazon: The Bradt Travel Guide, now in its third edition. I have also contributed several articles and book reviews to American Scientist, the magazine of Sigma Xi, a professional association for scientists, where I was Director of Emerging Technologies until August 2008.
