I have just published a book in the US (coming to the UK in February 2010) where the fictional protagonist is the son of a man who drowned when The Gaul went down. To be honest, the book doesn't say much about The Gaul incident except on the back cover, but it does have several bits and pieces about trawling disasters including the 'Triple Trawler Disaster'. My brother (Bill Hewtson) was a trawlerman during the 1960s and 1970s, my dad (Charlie Hewtson) was a fish merchant in Hull as was his dad. Two great-uncles were fishmongers (when they weren't following the horses) and my great-great grandfather was a whaler. For the first chapter of 'Missio' I compiled a list (as best I could) of all the trawlers that went down during peacetime since 1889. It is a truly sobering list. 'Missio' is based in Coltman Street where my mum was brought up, although the book doesn't name the street and doesn't follow its circular house numbering. Hull crime fiction writer Nick Quantrill has a new book coming out in March 2010 called 'Broken Dreams' which I believe is also based around the Hessle Road fishing community. When I launched 'The Dance of the Pheasodile' (based in Pease Street) we had an A63 Revisited 100 Free Pints Event at The Alexandra Hotel. If money is available, perhaps we should have another one to celebrate the fishing industry and a whole set of new Hull books coming out at the moment. The Alexandra Hotel actual features in 'Missio' so perhaps Tony there will be kind to us, even if I have blathered about the resident ghosts that punch and pinch his guests. Just a quick reminder of the Conservative bloggers get-together/piss up. From the comments and emails I've received it looks like Saturday the 30th May would be the most popular. The meeting place will be St Stephen's Tavern in Westminster (opposite Big Ben) at 1200. This is an informal do, not a strategy meeting. It's called a Conservative blogger's piss up but it is open to anyone really - other bloggers and those who visit and leave comments (the important people). I hope that those who have shown interest can still make it, it would be great to be able to put faces to names. Also, it should be a good day out if you fancy a bit of sightseeing. You will be sat 20 yards from Big Ben, you are also within a short walk to the London Eye, Westminster Palace, the Cathedral, a few of the top museums, Downing Street and a host of other points of interest.
