I'm beginning to think that if someone wanted Google to insert these artificial links in the middle of their pages, that a suggestion in the Google blog post for getting Google to link to already exiting named anchors might be...
submitted by William Slawski

I hadn't tried to find an example of the links to named anchors that was mentioned in the Official Google Blog post, but figured that it might help us think about how links to "artificial" named anchors might work. Is there a comfortable balance or equalibrium that a search engine can reach between being a portal that tries to keep visitors on its own pages as long as possible, and shows them advertising, and being a search index that gets visitors to...
submitted by William Slawski

Some very interesting points.

Ideally, traffic increases should come from both head terms and long tale terms, and ranking reports aren't going to necessarily capture all of those increases in an effective manner, especially with...
submitted by William Slawski

How Google Might Insert Artificial Named Anchors into Web Pages
Hi Steven,

I don't mind searching within a page myself either. I don't find myself convinced that using artificial name anchors like the patent filing describes is necessarily a good user experience.

One of the reasons that I become interested in...
submitted by William Slawski

This patent isn't the first one I've written about that says that a search engine may attempt to measure the quality of content that it finds on web pages. PageRank itself, which has been around more than a decade now, is supposed to be a...
submitted by William Slawski

That may be something that search engines have considered. It's possible that search engines could classify query terms differently, so that one type of query might be treated differently than another when it comes to the kinds of results...
submitted by William Slawski

Thank you. The point you raise about including multiple calls to action on a page is a good one. I'm not sure how much harm this would do to the black/gray hat methods you mention. I'm more concerned with the design implications behind it....
submitted by William Slawski

Good questions and points. Quick answers can be good, and it's possible that attribution in the form of a link does make it worth being the "source" of information shown.

There are other questions that can be asked though. Is there a...
submitted by William Slawski
