I'm a research director at the Institute for the Future, a think tank in Silicon Valley, and a visiting scholar in the Science Technology and Society program at Stanford University. My first book, Empire and the Sun: Victorian Solar Eclipse Expeditions, was published by Stanford University Press in 2002; I'm now working on a book on the end of cyberspace.
